“Would you like to go shopping?”

Morgan looks up from where she’s sitting cross-legged on the floor watching an old British series based on the life of Yorkshire veterinarian James Herriot. It had been my intention to broaden her horizons by introducing her to some classic programming outside her American movie fare. She had decided on this and while it’s not my first choice, she seems to like it. So does Mr. Wiggles, who sits beside her cocking his head at the dog on the screen.

“Shopping? For what?”

I put down the tablet I was using to read the morning news. “For whatever strikes your fancy. And for some bedroom furniture. It’s time I turned that guest room from an extended closet into a proper space for a little girl.”

She frowns at this. “Why? When I stay over I like to sleep with you. And when I don’t, I have my whole side of the duplex.”

“True, but how nice would it be to have a place here that’s special and unique for the little girl you love to be when we’re together, a room you wouldn’t have to explain at your own place. A special room for a special child?”

“Really?” Her smile is small at first, then widens. “Really?”

“Really,” I say, delighted as she launches herself from the floor and into my arms.

When I met Morgan, I never could have imagined how I’d come to adore her. I’d seen a troubled young woman in need of guidance, someone defiant and selfish and flawed. She was all those things, but she’s more. She’s funny and warm and sweet and creative in ways I don’t think she completely appreciates. Having been relieved of the pressure of hanging on to false friends while keeping the wolf away from her door, she’s flourished. She knows much more about computer programming and design than I could ever learn. Her website for the record store operates flawlessly, and the subsequent jobs were completed quickly. Morgan invested a portion of the income into advertising for her service and now has more and better paying work than she could have managed at any job, and all with the added benefit of living after hours as my little girl.

It was an arrangement that seemed to evolve organically. Her willingness to call me Daddy led to age-regressed behavior. She confided in me about her past as a latch key adolescent, about the loneliness. Now I have filled in the gap, giving her the life of a loved adolescent who comes “home” after work to a house where her Daddy is waiting with cuddles, a listening ear, and a spanking if she’s testy.

The weather has turned cool. I intend to buy Morgan some decent clothes fit for the sharp young professional she’s becoming. It’s a part of her I’ve encouraged, and with good reason.

I’ve had more than one woman call me Daddy, but when she does it, there’s a thrill unlike anything I’ve experienced before. It would be easy to edge her towards full immersion in this persona as my little one.
